Goodwill: Jersey City

Typically, this store is a give or take for me. It's mostly full of junk, and quite frankly, it's always full of really annoying people and their even more annoying children. But it's very near my house, and the ease of getting there plus all of the cheap teeny bopper stores on the same street make it a destination. Plus I often find some hidden gems there.

Yesterday was a fairly good gem day- despite the child who was riding his scooter through the store and the one that stood way too close, staring at my housemate and I while we discussed a vintage Ouija board.

For around $50, I brought home:

  • Bread machine
  • Stalin book for the Mr
  • Cream Banana Republic cardigan
  • White cotton tee with "burnt out" flower design (way cuter than I'm describing)
  • Green cotton hippie skirt
  • Cute little 50s style dress
  • Fuzzy leopard print shrug jacket, which is going on ebay
  • Vintage wrestling game for my boss, who collects old toys for display around the store

Reminisence is Moving

My dear friend +Voon  brought it to my attention that they put everything fifty percent off in a pre-moving sale. So, although it's not technically a thrift store, I still felt my voyage there (and subsequent purchases) were worthy of a mention.

Also, I'm doing The Artist's Way and this trip counted as my weekly Artist's Date. Two birds, one cheap stone. Ha!

My haul included the following

  • Brown Steampunk hat for Mr Thriftwhore
  • Plastic octopus for Tiki Kitchen
  • Riding crop (to replace one that was lost in a move many moons ago)
  • White lace fingerless gloves (going to a 50s prom in several months but might as well grab 'em now)
  • Speakeasy paper dolls
  • Vintage skirt in a pretty, bright turquoise color
  • Large bronze hair flower
  • A couple of fun postcards
  • 4 Betty Boop buttons
  • Leopard print/black flower hairpiece
  • 2 sets false eyelashes: one with red rhinestones and one with regular rhinestones

Black & Leopard Print

I wore this outfit to see a friend's band play LPR.

The picture (obviously) doesn't do the back of the shirt justice. It's really neat and drapey. But I was digging the leopard print accents and I've been obsessed with those shorts all late summer. They fit just right.

And yes, that is a peek into one of my closets.... And my vanity, which is actually an almost vintage china closet.

An Excellent Haul in Newark

No pictures this time around. But $20 at Salvation Army in Newark on a spontaneous Monday adventure:

Sunglasses
Houndstooth jacket
Evening gown
DVD (I'll See You In My Dreams)
Ann Taylor tweed long shorts

This is one pleased Boop.

Seersucker Dress

Nothing says summer like seersucker. I purchased this dress on my last Pittsburgh binge. I'm pretty sure its point of origin was the Red, White, and Blue but don't quote me on that. It fits perfectly and I am enamoured both with it and the man standing next to me in the photo.

Oh Chelsea Goodwill, How I Adore Thee!

Despite the fact that Goodwill in Chelsea is overpriced, sometimes overcrowded, and contains some overworked (and thus cranky) employees, it has a special place in my thrift whoring heart. A very special place. The list is extensive, but it has included highlights such as "OMG, I need a dress for a lindyhop piece and the dress rehearsal is in half an hour and the theme is 40s prom", "I need a rockin' dress for the Dance Parade", and "I have nothing to wear to 4th of July on the Empire Hotel rooftop". Truly, the place has never let me down.

Today's haul (to the tune of $50)
  • Black cocktail dress, for Wit's End tomorrow night
  • Basic black fitted tee
  • Ann Taylor Loft cap sleeve top in black
  • Banana Republic ribbed tank top in cream
  • Grey H&M skirt
  • Short peach nightie, lined in cream lace- perhaps to be used as part of Jazz Age Lawn Party's August outfit or a Mad Men style lingerie shoot
  • Off white cardigan thingie, made of a delightful soft cotton- one can never have too many of these, to protect from meat locker-esque AC all summer and provide cover for tattoos during long days spent in the sun

Going to All Bal Weekend

This was my "going to All Bal Weekend" outfit. Everything from the hair scarf to the boots was thrifted, except the necklace, which was a gift from my grandmother. (It is vintage. And it's my favorite.)

PS: The outfit has nothing to do with balboa. I was just dressed for the road trip, so there we go.

Hair scarf: random thrift store in Pittsburgh
Sunglasses: Housing Works Thrift Store in Tribeca
Tee: Bulk sale at either the Goodwill or Housing Works warehouse
Hoodie: either the South Side Goodwill or Red, White, and Blue in Pittsburgh
Skirt: I don't recall. I own a bunch of black skirts, of various origins.
Boots: Goodwill on McKnight Road, north of Pittsburgh
